Jahanpanah Fort which translates to “Sanctuary of the World” is a historical & ancient neighborhood in Delhi founded in the early 14th century by Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq. Jahanpanah Fort was the name of the capital city that he wanted to build as a fortress to ward off Mongol raids & invasions. Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq built Jahanpanah Fort around 1320 CE and was perhaps the most radical & controversial ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. With Mongol raids constantly threatening the boundaries of his realm, the Sultan united & fortified the existing four cities of Delhi, namely Siri, Tughlaqabad, Lal Kot, and Qila Rai Pithora, and enclosed them in a new city called Jahanpanah, meant to be a refuge as well as a military fortress.
