History of Alorna Fort, Goa
Located in Goa’s Mapusa city, the Alorna Fort was built by the Bhonsle’s, a fierce warrior dynasty of Sawantwadi that ruled several Indian kingdoms in the 17th century. The fort was established as a defence against the attacks of Maratha rulers on the Chapora River. About three centuries old, this fort has been a symbol of many battles against Portuguese intruders. After Bhonsle, the Marquis also known as the ‘Marquis of Alorna’ was the first intruder who ruled the fort in 1746. Then in 1781, another Portuguese ruler, Dom Frederico Guilherme, attacked the fort and took it under his control.
In the 17th or 18th century, many Portuguese rulers took advantage of the position of Alorna Fort to protect themselves from Maratha attacks. As such, Alorna Fort has seen various invasions over the past centuries. The cannon station located in Alorna Fort displays the defence mechanism of traditional times. According to archaeologists, this fort repeats the history of the defenders who were killed while fighting against the intruders.
The Architecture of Alorna Fort, Goa
The architecture of Alorna Fort is based on a special defence system to prevent the attack of Marathas. Traditionally, there were about 4 cannon stations and currently, only 2 cannon stations can be seen. Inside the Alorna Fort, only one individual building remains and there is a deep well at the centre. Earlier, the fort had various watchtowers but at present, there are only two watchtowers on the front side.
The fort is a major aspect of natural beauty and the view of the fort in the evening is quite mesmerizing. Green paddy fields and beautiful high plains can be seen around the Alorna Fort. The fort is presently included in the list of protected monuments recognized by the Government of Goa and is under renovation by the Archaeological Survey of India.
