In 1624, the Portuguese rulers began the construction of a town here in this area. But many viceroys felt that the area was not enough, and thus they shifted back to Old Goa. Fort Mormugao history took a turning point in the 17th century when Marathas conquered the fort from Portuguese rulers. But after a few years, the Portuguese ceded it back again. Today, the ruins of Mormugao Fort narrate the glorious old stories of its history and heritage.
