History of Reis Magos Fort
Fort Reis Magos India stands on the hill. It is not the original structure that was made earlier. However, it is not the first to be built in the Verem location. The Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur built the first version of this fort in 1493 as a military outpost. When the Portuguese destroyed the Sultanate in 1551, this fort was built. It is the first line of defence for Velha Goa. At that period, Velha Goa was the capital. This fort was expanded several times until being built-in 1707.
The fort lost its strategic role as a defence line in the early 1900s, and it was transformed into jail until 1993. However, the fort has been damaged by monsoon winds and floods and by invading forces. However, it was renovated after two and a half centuries. Along with the adjoining Reis Magos Church, the fort currently functions as a cultural centre. Hence, it is a popular destination among tourists.
