Recently, India has simplified its rules and introduced specific forms for OCI Card and Aadhar Card for NRI, making it easy for them to obtain one if they fulfil certain criteria. The modifications have been made through a circular that was made public by the Unique Identification Authority Of India (UIDAI), making it convenient to get an Aadhar card for NRI with OCI.
To apply for an Aadhar card Indian, non-resident Indians and Indian citizens living abroad must fill out specific papers. In order to avoid confusion with resident Indians, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) developed distinct forms for non-resident Indians under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Amendment Regulations, 2024.
As far as Aadhar for NRI is concerned, getting one is not mandatory but completely depends upon the choice of the individual. However, an Aadhar card in India is mandatory in case you want to make any financial transactions within the country.
There are different forms to extend an Aadhar card application for NRI. The UIDAI has come up with 9 different forms for residents and enrollment for Aadhaar for OCI.
Forms 1 and 3 are meant for applicants with valid evidence of address in India, whether they are residents or not. Form 1 is the Aadhar enrollment/update form for individuals over the age of 18, and Form 3 is for children between the ages of 5 and 18.
To apply for Aadhar card from USA or NRI Aadhar enrollments or updates with an address proof outside of India, Forms 2 and 4 have been introduced separately. Form 4 is for NRI children between the ages of 5 and 18, and Form 2 is for Aadhar for NRI adults.
To enrol children under the age of 5, the aadhaar card requirements include Form 5 (if the address is in India) and 6 (if it is outside of India).
Further, an Indian passport is a mandatory POI for Aadhar card NRI applicants. However, they can also choose to provide any other valid proof of address after carefully studying the details on the screen before the final submission.
Earlier, there was no requirement for an aadhaar card for OCI. However, after the government announced that an Aadhar Card does not clarify one’s citizenship, aadhar card for OCI is now required.
To apply for an OCI Aadhar card, you need a minimum of 182 days stay in India in a calendar year. Further, UIDAI requires your email address to keep you updated regarding your OCI Aadhar card since it does not support any SMS notifications on non-Indian phone numbers.
