When Is Christmas Celebrated?

Christmas falls on 25th December every year, a global holiday marking the birth of Jesus Christ to Mother Mary in Bethlehem. The term ‘Christmas’ combines ‘Christ’ and ‘mass,’  referring to a celebration or festival. According to Christianity, Jesus Christ is regarded as the son of God.

Why Is Christmas Celebrated?

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The term ‘Christmas’ originates from the Mass of Christ. A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died and then came back to life. The ‘Christ-Mass’ service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people had it at Midnight!

Today, people globally, irrespective of their beliefs, celebrate Christmas as a time for gatherings, gratitude, and the joy of giving and receiving gifts.

Why Is Christmas Celebrated On 25th December?

The exact birthday of Jesus remains unknown. The Bible doesn’t specify a date for it, so why do we mark it on December 25th? Early Christians debated this extensively. Furthermore, Jesus’ birth likely occurred between 2 BCE/BC and 7 BCE/BC, possibly around 4 BCE/BC (there isn’t a 0 – the years go from 1 BC/BCE to 1!).

The earliest recorded celebration of Christmas on December 25th dates back to 336, during the rule of the Roman Emperor Constantine, the first Christian Emperor. However, it wasn’t an official Roman state festival then.

Various traditions and theories attempt to explain why December 25th became Christmas Day. One early Christian belief ties it to the Annunciation, when Mary was informed about Jesus’ birth, observed on March 25th. The 25th of December, then, aligns nine months later with this event.
